A St. Augustine photographer’s guide to shooting bold, honest portraits once the sun is gone
The second the sun goes all the way down, something shifts. A session stops feeling planned and starts feeling chased – a little bit paparazzi, a little bit reckless, every shot happening in real time instead of being built up to. She isn’t polite. She doesn’t wait for anyone to be ready. She just shows up, demands attention, and asks everyone in front of the camera to have a little fun, dammit.
If golden hour is romance and blue hour is drama, after dark is seduction. She’s got real stage presence. She steals the show every time, and she’s not for the shy – she’s for the couples who aren’t afraid of a little PDA, who are ready to chase wherever the night takes them.
What After Dark Actually Is
Once the sun is completely gone, I’m working with two different tools, and the fun is in deciding which one – or both – a moment calls for. Sometimes it’s on-camera flash doing the heavy lifting: direct, harsh light hitting the scene as it happens, with all the grit and texture that comes with it. And sometimes I don’t touch the flash at all. Streetlamps. Neon signs. The glow spilling through a window. A porch light. There’s so much light already sitting around after dark if you know to look for it, and letting it do the work gives images a completely different mood than flash does – softer, moodier, a little more cinematic.
Neither one is right or better. It’s not trying to be flattering in the traditional sense, and it’s not trying to be perfectly lit either. It’s trying to be honest – whatever kind of honest that particular moment calls for.
Why I Chase Her
I love the fun she brings. There’s an in-the-moment energy to shooting after dark – bold, a little exposed, very much honest and unfiltered. She’s not shy, and she doesn’t let anyone else be shy either. She demands you show up, be present, and actually enjoy yourself instead of performing for the camera.
When I do reach for flash, I shoot it direct on TTL, letting it read the scene and match my settings rather than fussing over the technical side. I’m not chasing perfectly lit. I’m chasing grit and story. And when I don’t reach for it, I’m chasing whatever’s already glowing around us – because half the fun of shooting after dark is realizing you don’t always need to bring your own light. Sometimes the night already brought it for you.
Where I Find Her
She works almost anywhere, honestly, which is part of what makes her so fun. Downtown at night. A bar scene lit up in neon. An open field or a stretch of dark beach with nothing but stars overhead. An old abandoned warehouse with a pile of tires out front. I’m drawn to spaces with a lot of dark to play with – and honestly, spaces you probably shouldn’t be photographing in at all. That’s exactly what gives these images their edge.
Chasing Sarah and Sean
One of my favorite examples of this light is Sarah and Sean’s engagement session at a red-lit, seedy little bar in Jacksonville – their favorite local hangout, the kind of place with character in every corner. Neon signage, low light, the buzz of a Friday night around us. That’s the thing about the couples drawn to this kind of session – they tend to have a lot in common. Fond of PDA. Always up for going out. Willing to let loose and just be into each other without overthinking a single frame.
Sarah and Sean gave me spontaneous posing, real kissing, laughing at nothing in particular, and I moved between flash and the bar’s own neon glow depending on what the moment needed. Some frames are bold and direct. Others are soft, lit by nothing but the ambient light behind them. Both feel completely like them. That’s exactly what this kind of session is built for – honest, in the moment, and a genuinely good time.
Grit Over Perfect
After dark isn’t for every couple, and I say that with love. It’s bold. It’s a little unpredictable. It asks you to be fully in the moment instead of composed for it. But if that’s who you are – if you’re the couple who’d rather chase a good time than pose for a pretty one – this light will give you images that feel like you, not like a template. Real texture. Real grit. A story with some edge to it instead of a postcard.
