A Wedding Photographer’s Perspective
Not every couple dreams of a ballroom filled with hundreds of guests.
For many couples, the most meaningful way to get married is something quieter, slower, and far more intentional. An intimate wedding allows space for connection, creativity, and celebration in a way that larger weddings sometimes can’t.
And in a city like St. Augustine, Florida, where historic architecture, quiet courtyards, and ocean views exist around nearly every corner, intimate weddings feel especially natural.
As a St. Augustine wedding photographer, I’ve seen firsthand how beautifully smaller celebrations unfold here. When couples lean into the atmosphere of the city and design a day that truly reflects who they are, the result feels effortless, romantic, and unforgettable.

What “Intimate” Really Means for a Wedding
When people hear the phrase intimate wedding, they often assume it simply means fewer guests.
But in my experience, intimate weddings are far more about intention than numbers.
An intimate wedding is a day that centers around celebrating a couple’s love in the way that fits them best. It often means letting go of traditions that don’t resonate and creating new ones that feel authentic to who they are.
Instead of following a rigid formula, couples design a celebration around the experiences they genuinely enjoy- sharing an incredible meal with their closest people, wandering the historic streets together, or simply slowing down enough to fully absorb the moment.

Why St. Augustine Is Perfect for Intimate Weddings
One of the reasons I love photographing weddings in St. Augustine is that the city itself feels like part of the story.
As the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine offers a kind of timeless charm that’s difficult to replicate anywhere else. Cobblestone streets, Spanish architecture, tropical courtyards, and waterfront views create an atmosphere that feels almost European.
For couples planning an intimate wedding, that setting becomes an incredible advantage.
Rather than feeling limited to traditional wedding venues, couples can get creative with the spaces they choose to celebrate.
Some of my favorite areas for intimate wedding portraits and celebrations include:
• the quiet historic streets around Aviles Street
• the waterfront views along the St. Augustine Bayfront
• the romantic courtyards surrounding the Lightner Museum
Even iconic venues like The Treasury on the Plaza or 9 Aviles can feel incredibly personal when celebrations are kept small and intentional.
And because St. Augustine is so walkable, couples often move naturally between locations, allowing the entire city to become part of the experience.
A Personal Example: My Own Intimate Wedding
My husband and I actually chose an intimate wedding ourselves.
We surprised our family and friends with a small courtyard ceremony at The Raintree Restaurant on San Marco Avenue, followed by an incredible dinner and drinks together afterward.
It was simple, relaxed, and centered around exactly what we love to do- sharing great food, conversation, and time with the people closest to us.
Looking back, it felt like the perfect reflection of us.
And that’s what intimate weddings allow couples to do: celebrate in a way that genuinely feels like their life together.
The Advantages of a Smaller Wedding Day
From a photographer’s perspective, intimate weddings often create the most beautiful and meaningful moments.
Couples tend to feel more relaxed, which changes the entire energy of the day. Instead of rushing through timelines or coordinating large groups, there’s space to actually experience each moment as it happens.
That slower pace creates opportunities for:
• authentic interactions with guests
• relaxed and creative portraits
• quiet emotional moments
• a day that feels joyful instead of scheduled
When couples are able to fully immerse themselves in the experience, the photographs naturally reflect that energy.
It allows me to approach the day with both a documentary eye and an editorial mindset- capturing not only the events of the wedding but the atmosphere surrounding it.

What an Intimate Wedding Day in St. Augustine Could Look Like
One of the most beautiful things about intimate weddings is how naturally the day can unfold.
Imagine starting your morning slowly at one of the city’s historic boutique hotels, like Casa Monica Resort & Spa, before wandering through the quiet streets for portraits while the city is still waking up.
Your ceremony might take place in a private courtyard or along the waterfront near the St. Augustine Bayfront, followed by dinner at one of the city’s incredible restaurants- somewhere like The Floridian or Collage Restaurant.
Later in the evening, we might step out into the historic streets for a few final portraits beneath glowing street lamps before ending the night with cocktails or live music nearby.
In a city like this, the celebration doesn’t have to be confined to a single venue.
The entire city becomes part of the experience.

The Types of Couples Who Choose Intimate Weddings
Intimate weddings tend to attract couples who prioritize experience over spectacle.
They’re often couples who care deeply about the environment they create around their wedding day — the food, the setting, the atmosphere, and the people present.
Many are destination couples who fall in love with the charm of St. Augustine and choose to gather their closest friends and family here for a meaningful celebration.
Others simply want something more personal, more relaxed, and more aligned with who they are.
And for couples who value artistic photography and storytelling, intimate weddings often create the perfect environment for images that feel natural, emotional, and timeless.

One Piece of Advice for Couples Planning an Intimate Wedding
One of the biggest misconceptions about smaller weddings is that they require less planning.
In reality, intimate weddings often involve just as many moving pieces- sometimes even more.
Couples may find themselves coordinating vendors, managing deliveries, or organizing timelines themselves, which can quickly pull them away from actually enjoying the day.
That’s why I always recommend hiring a planner- or at the very least a day-of coordinator.
Having someone manage logistics allows couples to stay present and experience their wedding fully rather than worrying about what needs to happen next.
And when you’re planning an intimate celebration, presence is everything.
