What to Wear for Engagement Photos & Portrait Sessions
What you wear for your engagement or portrait session matters- but not in the way you might think.
It’s not about following strict rules or wearing what you think you should wear. It’s about choosing outfits that feel like you- just slightly elevated. The goal is to step into your session feeling confident, comfortable, and completely yourselves.
Because how you feel in your outfits?
That’s what truly shows up in your photos.
Start With the Feeling, Not the Outfit
Before you pick a single piece of clothing, ask yourselves:
How do you want these photos to feel?
Romantic? Playful? Editorial? Calm and intimate?
That answer becomes your foundation.
- If you want something romantic, lean into flowy fabrics, soft textures, and movement (How to Dress for a Romantic Style Engagement Session)
- If you want something fun and playful, bring in color, personality, and a little whimsy (Outfit Ideas for Your Fun & Playful Engagement Session).
- If you’re drawn to something more editorial and bold, think structure, clean lines, and intentional styling (How to Style Yourself for an Editorial Engagement Session).
From there, we build your outfits around that feeling.
Every couple has a unique style- this is about leaning into that and elevating it, not changing it.

Coordinating, Not Matching
One of the biggest misconceptions I see is couples trying to match exactly.
Instead, think complementary tones.
A good formula:
- neutrals + texture
- one person in something softer
- one person in a subtle statement
For example:
- creams, blacks, and soft blues paired with a pop of red
- neutrals layered with one standout color
This creates visual interest without feeling forced.
What I Love Seeing Couples Wear
For women, I always encourage outfits that allow for movement and expression.
- Flowy dresses
- Soft fabrics
- Pieces with texture (lace, linen, knits)
- Or something totally unique that reflects your personality
For men, this can vary depending on the vibe:
- Dress pants with a casual button down
- A well-tailored suit for something elevated
- Vintage tees with relaxed pants for a more laid-back, personality-driven look
There’s no one-size-fits-all- it’s about intention.

A Few Things to Avoid (and Why)
Not rules — just guidance to help your photos feel timeless.
- Bright white clothing → Creams and off-whites photograph much softer and flatter skin tones
- Tight or restrictive outfits → Movement is everything. Looser, well-fitting pieces photograph more naturally
- Matching outfits → Can feel dated, coordination creates a much more elevated look
- Anything uncomfortable → If you’re adjusting it all session, it will show
And yes- jeans can work, but only when they truly fit the vibe (think intentional styling, not default outfits).
Choosing Colors That Work for You
I tend to gravitate toward neutrals with intentional pops of color.
Think:
- creams, tans, soft blacks
- layered with reds, pinks, yellows, or greens
This adds depth and personality without overwhelming your photos.
For more editorial sessions, we can be even more intentional- pairing wardrobe with location, textures, and overall concept.
Dressing for Your Location
Your environment plays a huge role in how your outfits come together.
- Beach sessions → light fabrics, movement, soft tones
- Downtown sessions → structured, elevated, clean
- Nature or field sessions → earthy tones, texture, softness
- Editorial sessions → bold, intentional, fashion-forward
Your outfits and location should feel like they belong together.
If you’re still in the early planning stages, this pairs really well with thinking through your location and overall vision for your session. Best Photo Locations in St. Augustine

A few things that make a big difference:
- Be comfortable in what you’re wearing
- Bring a backup outfit (just in case)
- Stay hydrated and well-rested
- Be open to spontaneity- some of the best moments are unplanned

Final Thoughts
What you wear matters.
But how you feel in it matters even more.
This is one part of your session that’s worth putting intention into- not perfection, just thoughtfulness.
Create a mood board.
Start with pieces you already own.
Try things on together.
And if you want help? Send me what you’re thinking- I love being part of that process and helping you refine your vision.
Because the way you show up is what makes your photos feel like you.
Styling is such a big part of how your session comes to life- and I’m always there to help guide you through it, from outfit choices to the overall vision. You can see more of how I approach portrait sessions here, and if you’re ready to start planning your own, you can inquire here.
