There’s something about a storm rolling in that changes everything.
The air feels different.
The light shifts.
The energy becomes a little electric, like something is about to happen.
When I arrived at Danielle and Jake’s home in Mandarin, just outside of Jacksonville, the sky was already heavy with clouds. Winds were picking up. The kind of weather that makes most people reschedule.
But not them.
A home filled with history (and new beginnings)
Danielle welcomed me inside as she was finishing the charcuterie and fruit platters for their backyard picnic.
Their boys were running around, half dressed, grabbing socks and shoes with that chaotic, excited energy that only kids can bring.
It felt full. Lived in. Real.
The house itself carries history. It was Jake’s grandmother’s home, now slowly being renovated and reimagined into something that feels entirely theirs.
I’ve always loved spaces like this. Homes that already hold stories. Homes that evolve with the people inside them. You could feel that here.
An intimate backyard picnic, styled simply and beautifully
We moved outside into their backyard shortly after, left slightly overgrown on purpose, which made everything feel softer and more natural.
The picnic itself was styled by Picnic Party Jacksonville, and it was exactly what the space called for- elevated, thoughtful, and completely unforced.
The setup was simple, but incredibly intentional:
- layered linens
- decorative jars
- wine and fresh fruit
- soft string lights
- a vintage fringed umbrella
It felt curated without trying too hard.
Just enough to create a moment, without taking away from it.
The dress that made everything feel timeless
Danielle wore a thrifted blue floral dress that fit her like it was made for her.
Mid-calf length. Flowy at the bottom. Three-quarter sleeves. A deep neckline that felt both feminine and effortless. It moved beautifully in the wind, adding softness and motion to every frame.
This is exactly what I mean when I talk about romantic styling; pieces that feel natural, lived-in, and connected to you.
If you’re trying to figure out what direction to take with your outfits, I go deeper into that here: What to Wear for Your Engagement Session

Starting with what matters most
Before we fully leaned into the session, we included their boys.
And I loved that.
It felt grounding and honest, because this is their life. They are incredible parents. The kind that are fully in it together.
Those moments at the beginning gave the entire session a different depth, before the grandparents took over inside and we shifted into something slower.
The storm that changed everything
By the time we stepped fully into shooting, the sky had shifted.
What started as overcast turned into something deeper, layers of gray clouds rolling in, mixed with this eerie yellow cast that anyone familiar with Florida storms knows all too well.
It’s the kind of light that feels both beautiful and unsettling and I’ll be honest, I hesitated at first.
That yellow tone isn’t easy. It’s unpredictable. It can throw everything off. But Danielle didn’t hesitate. She trusted the process. Trusted me. And we leaned into it.
No flash.
No over-correcting.
Just letting the low light and the storm tell the story.
And it changed everything.
Why I wove film into this session
This didn’t need to be an all-film session to feel like one.
I brought film in intentionally, at the moments that felt slower, quieter, a little more felt than directed. The kind of moments you don’t want to rush past.
Film changes the energy. It asks you to pause. To be present. To trust what’s unfolding instead of trying to control it.
At one point, I handed them one of my old film cameras and let them photograph each other. And everything softened. There’s something different about being seen by your person, no pressure, no performance. Just familiarity, curiosity, and the way they already know you.
The grain, the imperfection, the way film holds light, it all adds this quiet layer of nostalgia. Not overpowering the moment.
Just deepening it.
A love that doesn’t need direction
I’ve photographed Danielle and Jake before, and their connection has always felt effortless.
They don’t need to be told how to interact. They just… are.
There’s a quiet passion between them, a steadiness and a partnership that feels deeply rooted.
And in a setting like this- at home, in the middle of a storm- that kind of love becomes even more visible.
What made this session unforgettable
It wasn’t just the storm. It was the choice to stay. To trust the moment instead of control it. To embrace something imperfect and let it become beautiful anyway.
Most couples would have rescheduled. Danielle and Jake didn’t.
And because of that, we created something that feels entirely theirs- intimate, emotional, a little wild, and deeply romantic.

Thinking about a session like this?
It doesn’t have to be perfect.
It doesn’t have to be planned down to every detail.
Sometimes the most meaningful sessions happen in the places that already matter to you- your home, your backyard, your everyday life.
