(From a Local Wedding Photographer’s Perspective)
There’s something magnetic about St. Augustine.
The history. The architecture. The way golden light spills through the narrow streets downtown. The quiet charm of the beaches just outside the city.
As a wedding photographer based here, one of the questions I’m asked most often is:
“When is the best time of year to get married in St. Augustine?”
The truth is, every season brings its own kind of beauty to this city. But the experience- and the way your photographs look- can shift dramatically depending on the time of year.
Here’s what it’s really like to get married in St. Augustine throughout the seasons, from someone who photographs here regularly.

Spring Weddings in St. Augustine (March–May)
If I had to choose a favorite season to photograph weddings here, spring would be very close to the top.
This is when the city feels the most alive.
Bougainvillea spills over historic walls. Azaleas bloom across courtyards and gardens. The entire town feels lush and vibrant, which creates the most beautiful natural backdrop for portraits.
The weather is another reason couples love spring here.
Mornings are crisp and cool, while afternoons feel warm and sun-kissed without the intensity of summer heat. It’s the kind of weather where couples and guests can truly enjoy being outside.
Spring weddings also tend to feel fresh and romantic, which pairs beautifully with the historic charm of downtown.

Fall Weddings in St. Augustine (October–November)
Fall is another incredible season for weddings here.
While early fall can still carry a bit of Florida warmth, the humidity begins to drop, making the evenings much more comfortable.
But the real magic?
The sunsets.
In the fall, the skies over St. Augustine often explode into deep oranges, pinks, and purples. Some of the most dramatic skies I’ve ever photographed have happened during October and November weddings.
There’s also a unique energy in the city during this time.
St. Augustine begins preparing for its famous Nights of Lights, tourism picks up again, and the entire town feels a little electric- in the best way.

Summer Weddings in St. Augustine (June–September)
Summer weddings here can be beautiful, but they require a bit more thoughtful planning.
Florida summers are hot and humid, which means many weddings take place indoors with intentional portrait time built into cooler parts of the day.
That said, summer can also bring something incredible to the table: dramatic skies.
Storm clouds often roll through in the late afternoon, creating natural cloud cover that softens the light and makes skin appear dreamy and glowing in photographs.
I also see more sunrise elopements during the summer months, especially along the beach. Early morning ceremonies allow couples to avoid the heat while capturing some of the most peaceful light of the entire day.

Winter Weddings in St. Augustine (December–February)
Winter weddings here feel like something out of a storybook.
St. Augustine doesn’t typically experience true cold until January or February, which means December weddings often still enjoy comfortable temperatures.
During this time, the city is decorated with thousands of twinkling lights for Nights of Lights, transforming downtown into a glowing holiday town.
Sunsets happen earlier in winter, but they can still be incredibly dramatic- especially along the bayfront or near the marsh.
Winter weddings here feel cozy, romantic, and incredibly atmospheric, especially for evening celebrations.
Navigating Tourist Season
Because St. Augustine is such a beloved destination, certain times of year can bring heavier tourism.
The busiest periods tend to be:
- Spring break
- Summer vacation months
- Nights of Lights (November–January)
But this is where working with a local photographer truly matters.
There are hidden streets, quiet courtyards, and tucked-away corners throughout downtown that are still breathtaking but far less crowded.
I often guide couples toward locations away from heavy tourist areas like St. George Street or the busiest parts of the bayfront, while still capturing the charm that makes St. Augustine so special.
And when possible, early morning portraits can feel almost magical- the city quiet, the light soft, and the streets nearly empty.
How Light Shapes Your Wedding Photos
One thing couples don’t always realize is how much timing and light shape the feeling of their photographs.
Each part of the day tells a different visual story.
Early morning and blue hour after sunset tend to feel soft, romantic, and intimate.
Mid-morning through early afternoon light creates a brighter, more editorial look- crisp, polished, and modern.
And nighttime portraits using flash bring a completely different energy: playful, cinematic, and full of personality.
Because I photograph here regularly, I help couples build timelines that take advantage of these different lighting moments.
