A photographer’s guide to intimate, meaningful wedding celebrations

There’s something incredibly romantic about an elopement.

Stripped of the pressure of a large production, the focus shifts back to what matters most: the two of you, your connection, and the experience of the day itself.

And few places lend themselves to that kind of celebration better than St. Augustine.

With historic architecture, quiet cobblestone streets, beautiful beaches, moss-covered oak trees, and a culture centered around good food, art, and history, this city feels like a private little pocket of romance tucked along Florida’s coast.

For couples who want something intimate, meaningful, and beautifully documented, eloping in St. Augustine can be the perfect way to begin your marriage.

If you’re still exploring what a smaller wedding could look like here, you may also enjoy reading my guide to How to Plan an Intimate Wedding in St. Augustine, which walks through how couples design intentional celebrations in this city.

What Is an Elopement?

An elopement today looks very different than it once did.

For most couples, an elopement simply means a small wedding centered around the couple rather than a large-scale event. Sometimes it’s just the two of you. Other times it includes a few close family members or friends.

What makes an elopement special isn’t the guest count- it’s the intention behind the day.

The celebration becomes less about tradition and more about creating an experience that reflects who you are together.

Some couples exchange vows at sunrise on the beach.

Others marry in a quiet courtyard followed by dinner at their favorite restaurant.

There’s no single way to elope- and that freedom is exactly what makes these celebrations so meaningful.

Why St. Augustine Is Perfect for Elopements

St. Augustine holds a kind of charm that’s hard to describe until you experience it.

It’s historic and romantic without feeling overly formal.

Walkable yet full of hidden corners.

Lively while still maintaining that small-town warmth.

Within just a few blocks you’ll find:

• historic Spanish architecture

• quiet cobblestone streets

• waterfront views

• museums and galleries

• incredible restaurants

• beautiful coastal beaches

For couples planning a destination elopement, this means the entire city becomes part of the experience.

Many couples spend the morning wandering downtown together, exchange vows somewhere meaningful, and celebrate the evening with a private dinner and drinks.

And when it comes to portraits, the city offers endless variety.

You can explore some of my favorite portrait locations in Best Places for Wedding Photos in St. Augustine, where I share several of the spots couples love most.

The Best Places to Elope in St. Augustine

One of the things I love most about photographing elopements here is how many beautiful locations couples can choose from.

Each setting offers a slightly different feeling depending on the atmosphere you want for your day.

The St. Johns County Courthouse

s one of the easiest ways to elope.

After the ceremony, we can wander through historic downtown for portraits among the city’s architecture and quiet streets.

The result is classic, romantic, and effortlessly beautiful.

Vilano Beach

Vilano Beach offers a relaxed coastal setting that feels quieter than many other nearby beaches.

Sunrise ceremonies here are especially magical.

The early morning light is warm and soft, and the beach is often nearly empty- making it a peaceful place to exchange vows before the day begins.

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park

Washington Oaks is one of the most beautiful natural spaces along Florida’s coast.

With gardens, towering oak trees, and dramatic coquina rock formations along the shoreline, it offers an incredible setting for couples who want nature woven into their wedding day.

Permits are typically required for ceremonies here, but the setting is well worth the extra planning.

The Lightner Museum Courtyard

For couples drawn to historic elegance, the Lightner courtyard feels almost European.

The arches, fountains, and Spanish Revival architecture create an intimate atmosphere that is perfect for small ceremonies and portraits.

Bayfront Bed & Breakfasts

Many of the charming bed & breakfasts along the bayfront offer small courtyards and gardens that are perfect for elopements.

Couples often exchange vows there before walking to dinner or celebratory drinks nearby.

This creates a wedding day that feels less like an event and more like an experience woven naturally into the city.

The Most Beautiful Times of Day for Elopement Photos

Light shapes the mood of your photos in powerful ways.

Because St. Augustine offers such diverse scenery, the time of day you choose can completely change how your story looks on camera.

Sunrise

Sunrise brings some of the softest, most romantic light of the day.

Beaches glow with warm tones, and downtown streets remain quiet and peaceful.

For couples seeking an intimate and calm experience, sunrise can feel incredibly special.

Sunset

Sunset near the marshlands surrounding St. Augustine is breathtaking.

Golden light filters through moss-covered oak trees, creating dreamy, cinematic scenes that feel timeless.

Blue Hour

After sunset, downtown St. Augustine transforms.

Street lamps glow against historic buildings, and the city takes on a romantic nighttime atmosphere.

Blue hour portraits often become some of the most artistic images from the day.

Planning an Elopement in St. Augustine

Even though elopements are smaller, thoughtful planning still makes a huge difference.

Some helpful things to consider include:

• choosing locations based on lighting and time of day

• planning around tourist crowds

• checking for permits at certain parks or beaches

• creating a relaxed timeline for portraits and celebrations

Many couples also choose to hire a planner or coordinator to help manage logistics so they can stay fully present in the moment.

And if you’re planning portraits around downtown, building a timeline that allows space for creativity can make a big difference.

You can learn more about that in Build a Wedding Timeline That Gives Space for Editorial Portraits.

A Personal Note on Intimate Celebrations

Small weddings hold a special place in my heart.

My husband and I actually celebrated our own wedding in a very intimate way here in St. Augustine.

We planned a surprise wedding for our guests at The Raintree Restaurant– with a courtyard ceremony followed by dinner and drinks with our closest family and friends.

Even though the day itself felt relaxed and intimate, it took nearly a year of planning to bring everything together seamlessly.

The location.

The portraits downtown.

The dinner experience.

Every detail was intentional.

That’s exactly what I love most about intimate celebrations.

They allow couples to slow down, create meaningful moments, and experience their wedding day in a way that truly reflects them.

Eloping in St. Augustine

Whether you’re exchanging vows on a quiet beach at sunrise, celebrating beneath historic arches, or sharing dinner with loved ones at a favorite restaurant, St. Augustine offers endless possibilities for meaningful elopements.

It’s romantic, timeless, and full of places that feel made for love stories.

Short answer: yes. But not for the reason most photographers will give you. Most will tell you it’s for the photos. The save the dates, the wedding website header, the framed print above your fireplace someday. And those things are real — the photos matter and you’ll use them. But that’s not actually why I […]
