A local photographer’s guide to intimate wedding locations

St. Augustine is one of the most romantic places in Florida to elope.

With historic architecture, quiet cobblestone streets, beautiful beaches, and lush gardens, the city offers endless backdrops for couples who want an intimate and meaningful wedding day.

One of the best parts about eloping here is that your celebration can be as simple or as adventurous as you want it to be. Some couples exchange vows at sunrise on the beach, while others choose a historic courtyard ceremony followed by dinner at one of the city’s incredible restaurants.

If you’re wondering where to begin, these are five of the best places to elope in St. Augustine.

If you’re still deciding whether an elopement is right for you, you may also enjoy reading my guide on How to Plan an Intimate Wedding in St. Augustine which explores how couples design smaller, intentional celebrations in this beautiful city.

1. Washington Oaks Gardens State Park

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is easily one of the most beautiful natural locations near St. Augustine.

The park features:

• manicured gardens

• towering oak trees

• walking paths and reflecting ponds

• unique coquina rock formations along the beach

Couples who love nature often choose this location because it offers both garden elegance and dramatic coastal scenery in one place.

It’s especially beautiful in spring when the gardens are in bloom.

Ceremonies here do require a permit, but the result is a peaceful and incredibly romantic setting for exchanging vows.

If you’re drawn to moss-covered oaks, quiet garden paths, and a setting that feels both secluded and cinematic, I go deeper into planning a Washington Oaks elopement here; Eloping at Washington Oaks Garden in St. Augustine.

2. Vilano Beach

Vilano Beach offers a quieter, more relaxed alternative to some of the busier beaches nearby.

Sunrise ceremonies here are particularly magical. The early morning light is soft and golden, and the shoreline is often nearly empty.

This location works beautifully for couples who want a simple beach ceremony followed by portraits along the water and downtown streets.

After the ceremony, many couples celebrate with brunch or coffee nearby before exploring the historic district for additional portraits.

If a quiet beach, ocean air, and a more laid-back coastal feel speak to you, I share everything you need to know about eloping at Vilano Beach in my Vilano Beach Elopement Guide.

3. The St. Johns County Courthouse

For couples who want something simple and classic, the St. Johns County Courthouse is one of the easiest places to elope in St. Augustine.

Civil ceremonies here are straightforward and intimate, making them a great option for couples planning a smaller wedding.

Afterward, we can walk through downtown St. Augustine for portraits among the city’s beautiful architecture and historic streets.

Many couples love pairing a courthouse ceremony with a celebratory dinner at one of the city’s historic restaurants.

If you’re leaning toward something simple, intimate, and effortlessly romantic, you can read more about courthouse elopements in St. Augustine here- How to Elope at the St. Augustine Courthouse.

4. The Lightner Museum Courtyard

The Lightner Museum courtyard offers one of the most elegant settings in the historic district.

With Spanish Revival architecture, arched walkways, and a beautiful fountain courtyard, the space feels almost European.

Couples who love architecture and history are often drawn to this location because of its timeless atmosphere.

Even if the ceremony takes place elsewhere, the courtyard is also one of the most beautiful places in the city for portraits.

For couples wanting timeless architecture, soft courtyard light, and a romantic setting right in the heart of the city, you can explore the full Lightner Courtyard Elopement Guide here.

5. Historic Downtown St. Augustine

Sometimes the best elopement location isn’t a venue at all.

Historic downtown St. Augustine is filled with quiet side streets, hidden courtyards, and beautiful architecture that create incredible backdrops for intimate weddings.

Couples often exchange vows in a small courtyard or private space before wandering through the city for portraits.

Some of my favorite areas for photos include Aviles Street, quiet streets near Flagler College, and hidden corners throughout the historic district.

You can explore more portrait locations in my guide to Best Places for Wedding Photos in St. Augustine.

If you love the idea of wandering cobblestone streets, historic textures and a day that feels like a romantic date through the city, I break down How to Elope in Downtown St. Augustine here.

Choosing the Right Elopement Location

Each of these locations offers a slightly different atmosphere.

Some couples love the peaceful nature of the gardens, while others prefer the charm and energy of downtown.

The best location for your elopement ultimately depends on the kind of experience you want your wedding day to feel like.

Lighting, timing, and crowd levels can all shape the experience, which is why planning ahead makes such a difference.

Short answer: yes. But not for the reason most photographers will give you. Most will tell you it’s for the photos. The save the dates, the wedding website header, the framed print above your fireplace someday. And those things are real — the photos matter and you’ll use them. But that’s not actually why I […]
