Engagements

You’re Session Is on the Calendar – Here’s What’s Ahead.

Couple snuggles in close behind bar table during a portrait session downtown at night in Jacksonville, Florida.

Welcome – I’m genuinely thrilled you’re here. Whether we’re photographing your engagement, this season of pregnancy, or a “just because” moment you wanted captured exactly as it is right now – your session is officially locked in, and I can’t wait to get started.

The Concept

Before we shoot anything, I’ll send over a concept pitch – a moodboard outlining the themes, energy, and visual style I’m envisioning for your session, built from everything we’ve discussed. This isn’t a generic template pulled off Pinterest; it’s specific to you, your story, and the feeling we’re chasing together. Take a look, sit with it, and let me know what resonates. This is meant to be collaborative from the very first step – if something doesn’t feel right, we adjust until it does.

Wardrobe & Styling

Once we’ve landed on the concept, we’ll work together on wardrobe – and most of what we use comes straight from your own closet. I’m genuinely good at looking at what you already own and finding the piece that makes the whole look click. Sometimes it’s a fun pair of shoes. Sometimes it’s your mom’s fur coat, a vintage dress, a pair of lace gloves tucked in a drawer. I once spotted a hoop skirt liner hanging in a client’s closet and immediately knew – that’s it, that’s the piece. It became such a fun, intentional addition, and it made the whole session feel editorial instead of ordinary. That’s the kind of eye I bring to your wardrobe: not “buy something new,” but “let’s find what’s already yours and make it unforgettable.”

Why Lighting Matters

Here’s something people don’t always think about going in: the time of day we shoot isn’t just a logistics decision – it’s part of the story we’re telling. I choose light the way a director chooses a mood.

Blue hour is one of my favorites for intimate, quiet stories – grainy, soft, and a little rough all at once. It’s the light that lets silhouettes speak and softness take over.

Sunrise and sunset are what they are – warm, low-contrast, easy. They give a feeling of relaxation, of ease, of nothing being rushed.

Midday, done right, is bold. Harsh shadows can absolutely stun when they’re used intentionally – we can bring in flash during full sun for something editorial, or shoot on film for something nostalgic. There’s more range in midday light than people expect.

Night, with flash, might be my favorite of all. It brings out a flirtiness, a carefree energy, that’s hard to get any other way.

When we talk through your session timing, this is what I’m actually thinking about – not just what looks pretty, but what light will carry the emotional tone we’re going for.

Session Day

We always start easy. In the first ten minutes, I’m mostly testing my lighting – I’ll have you stand together, smile, hold hands, walk away, anything to get you loosened up and comfortable. I tell every couple this upfront: those first images are ones I’ll probably never use, but they’re the perfect starting point. There’s no pressure in them.

From there, I ease you into ideas, poses, and prompts – sometimes staging a shot with depth and distance between you, playing with layers and levels in the frame, building playful, editorial poses that make a moment stand out and demand attention. That’s the part people call “effortless” – but it’s actually intentional, in-the-moment direction that I’m calling as we go.

And then there’s the in-between – the moments I step back and just let breathe. I’m watching for mannerisms, the way you look at each other, what naturally draws you in. Sometimes it’s not even a prompt at all – it’s just an invitation for all of us to breathe. Those pauses are often where the realest images come from.

Here’s the honest truth: I can take a pretty picture anywhere. What I can’t manufacture is real chemistry – that comes from you, from how open you are to my sometimes-weird ideas, from how into each other you actually are. But once that starts to come out, the rest is easy and fun. And it’s usually the guy who complained the most about doing this who ends up having the best time by the end.

Gallery Delivery

Once your session wraps, I get to work editing your full gallery with the same care and depth I put into every project – color, tone, the layered editing that makes a gallery feel cohesive rather than just a batch of individual photos. I’ll let you know your delivery timeline when we wrap your session, so you know exactly what to expect.

Albums & Prints

I’d genuinely encourage you to consider printing from this session – not just leaving your images on a drive or a gallery link that won’t last forever. These are images worth having in your hands. You’ll be able to design and order prints or an album directly from your gallery, and everything is produced through reputable, industry-leading printers so I can guarantee the quality of what you receive.

I’m Here Throughout

If you have questions about styling, timing, locations, or anything at all as we get closer to your session – email me, text me, ask. I’d rather you reach out than sit with a question alone. This process should feel exciting, not stressful, and I’m here to make sure it stays that way.

I can’t wait to create something beautiful with you.

St. Augustine Engagement Photographer | Editorial, Experience-Driven Sessions The most common fear I hear from couples booking engagement photos isn’t about outfits or weather. It’s this: “We’re awkward in photos.” Here’s the truth: most people aren’t awkward in front of a camera. They’re just overly aware of it. And the fastest way to remove that […]

A St. Augustine photographer’s guide to shooting the harshest light of the day – on purpose Most photographers run from midday sun.
